New London cop convicted in connection with Westerly fight

New London ― A New London police officer was convicted of disorderly conduct in a Rhode Island court earlier this month in connection with a fight in Westerly.

Officer Thomas Northup was found guilty of disorderly conduct in connection with a Feb. 6 arrest following a fight involving four men at the Dunn’s Corner Mobil gas station on Route 1. Westerly police said Northup was in an argument and appeared to have been struck by another man before responding with a punch of his own.

Court records show Northup was found not guilty of simple assault and/or battery following a hearing in district court. The guilty finding and sentencing was completed on April 4 when Northup was ordered to pay $96.75 as a result of the conviction, records show.

It is unclear if Northup will face discipline. Northup was placed on administrative leave on Feb. 8 and cleared to return to work on April 11. He remains the subject of an internal investigation.

Northup was once fired from the force in 2012 for unauthorized use of deadly force after he shot a man who was high on drugs when he stole an ice truck, fled police and crashed the vehicle on Aug. 24, 2011. The truck was on its side when Northup shot the driver, Curtis Cunningham, multiple times. Cunningham was paralyzed as the result of his injuries. He sued the city and later settled for $2 million.

Northup was the second New London officer placed on paid administrative leave in recent weeks. Captain Todd Bergeson was placed on leave March 27 during an investigation into allegations related to his “use of leave time and testimony regarding such use.” He remains in leave.
