Mildred L. Van Vlack Hamilton, 93, of Cromwell, formerly of Farmington and Plainville, died at the Middlesex Hospital Hospice Care Center in Middletown on May 30 following a long illness. She was the wife of the late John David Hamilton. Mildred was born in Atlantic, Iowa, on Feb. 27, 1919, daughter of the late Ruth Stone Van Vlack and the late Claude Hall Van Vlack.  She received her degree in child development from Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa, in 1943, and later that year married John D. Mildred was a 60-year member of The PEO Sisterhood, as well as a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Hartford, and later, the First Church of Christ Congregational in Farmington. She enjoyed many things: nature, especially trees and geology; art; classical music; quilting; and games like Chinese Checkers and Scrabble.

Mildred’s family gives their heartfelt thanks to the staff and volunteers at Pilgrim Manor at Covenant Village of Cromwell and the Hospice Care Center at Middlesex Hospital for their loving care, help, and support throughout Mildred’s final years and days.

Mildred is survived by her daughters, Judith Hamilton Jerome and her husband Robert of Old Saybrook and Thia (aka Cynthia) Hamilton of Washington, D.C.; her grandchildren, Kaija Comin of Maine, Emily Jerome and her husband Dr. Felipe Salvador of Mexico, Christopher Mac Heller-Ogden and his wife Shana of Chicago, Illinois, and Bryan Christopher Jerome of New York; and three great-grandchildren, Joscelyn, Evan, and Easton Bradford. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Mary Catharine “Katie” Van Vlack, as well as 20 nieces and nephews, their spouses, and their children. She was predeceased by her brothers, Lawrence Hall Van Vlack and Philip Wallace Van Vlack, and her sister, Helen Van Vlack Hutchinson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to either the Covenant Village of Cromwell Benevolent Fund, 52 Missionary Rd., Cromwell, CT 06416, or to the Middlesex Hospital Hospice Unit, 28 Crescent St., Middletown, CT 06457.
