Marilyn Humphrey Hotchkiss Schumann, 91, Formerly of Madison

Marilyn H. Hotchkiss Schumann, 91, formerly of Madison, died in Binghamton, New York, on June 17. She was born in Binghamton, New York, on June 1, 1921, daughter of the late Janet Love Bannatyne and Howard Humphrey. Marilyn had returned to her hometown on her 91st birthday and died due to complications from pneumonia at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton. She was recently predeceased by her dearly beloved second husband of 35 years, Robert (Bob) Ford Schumann, with whom she resided in Madison, with "snowbird" winters in Delray Beach, Florida. Marilyn was also predeceased by her first husband, Renna (Hockey) Spaulding Hotchkiss.

Marilyn dedicated herself to raising her original four children and continued, after marrying Bob, to be a devoted loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to their merged families. Marilyn always created a welcoming home filled with joyful gatherings of friends and family, enriched by delicious food, stimulating conversation, and great music. She was involved in various community activities and was a member of the First Congregational Churches of Binghamton and Madison. She had a humble wisdom and a moral integrity gleaned from living a simple, yet full and vibrant life. Anyone who had the good fortune to meet or spend time with Marilyn was struck by her warm, loving manner and disarming sense of humor. Marilyn will be deeply missed by her beloved children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, E. James (Jim) Hotchkiss and his wife Cathy and Jim's son Chad Hotchkiss and wife Tina, along with their children, Riley and Sadie; her daughter Carol Hotchkiss Potts and Carol's son Judah Thissell and wife Shin; her son Robert Ford Schumann, Jr., and his wife Marilee and their children Robin Schumann and Brook Schumann and her husband Brandon; her daughter Mary James (Jamie) Schumann Hurley and her sons Tague Hurley and Ford Hurley and Ford's wife Mary; her daughter Linda A. Hotchkiss and her husband Steve Cox; her daughter Lola Ford Schumann; her son David Dickinson Schumann and his husband Michael Agenbroad; and her daughter Barbara E. Hotchkiss and Barbara's daughter Eliza Hotchkiss-Yager. She is also survived by many adoring nieces and nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, as well as many loving friends and neighbors, whose sincere, enduring kindness she cherished. She was predeceased by her two sisters Janet Humphrey Atwater and Justine Humphrey Stroud Svenlid, for whom she hosted many memory-filled, fun "family fiestas."

Her memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Madison, 26 Meetinghouse Lane, Madison, on Saturday, July 14, at 11 a.m., with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to a charity of one's choice.
