Alessio Izzo, 87, Guilford, formerly of West Haven

Alessio Izzo, 87, of Guilford, a former 60-year resident of West Haven, died peacefully on April 24 at the St. Raphael Campus of Yale-New Haven Hospital, with his family by his side.  He was the beloved husband of the late Maria Elena Mazzarella Izzo.  Alessio was born in Castel Marrone, Italy, on Oct. 31, 1925, son of the late Giovanni and Antonia Carlino Izzo. He had worked for many years in West Haven as a cabinet maker.

Alessio had a wonderful life, spending many hours with family, friends, and especially his granddaughters. He created many fond memories of backyard BBQs and late night basement parties. He also enjoyed helping friends and family make wine, then enjoying the wine…then topping it off with an espresso and a shot of anisette.

His family thanks all the nurses and staff at The Guilford House for their many hours of hard work and help, and for just being a friend to Alessio.  They made the last few years of his life peaceful, comforting, and memorable, and he loved them all.

Alessio is survived by his loving children John Izzo and his partner Frank Romano of Guilford, and Antoinette Izzo-Turner and her husband Robert Turner of Cape Coral, Florida.  He was the loving “nonno” of Michelle Izzo Royster and her husband Geoffrey of Milford and Danielle Izzo and her fiancé Joshua Korshandi of Milford.  In addition, he is survived by his beloved sister Marianna Acabbo of West Haven, as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by five siblings, Rosa, Luigi, Raffaele, Giuseppe, and Stefano, and by his nephew John Acabbo.

His funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., North Haven, on Saturday, April 27, at 9:15 a.m., for a mass of Christian burial at the Church of the Resurrection in Wallingford at 10 a.m.  Entombment will follow in the All Saints Mausoleum. Visiting hours will be Friday, April 26, from 4 to 8 p.m.  Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 45 Ash St., East Hartford, CT  06108. www.northhavenfuneral.com.
