    Michael P. Gallicchio, Essex, formerly of Old Saybrook

    Michael P. Gallicchio, 97, of Essex, formerly of Old Saybrook, husband of 64 years to the late Blanche Martino, died peacefully July 12 at Essex Meadows Health Center. 

    Mike was born Jun. 9, 1916, in Hartford to the late Nicholas and Madeline (Boniface) Gallicchio. He graduated from Weaver High School, in Hartford and attended Hillyer College (now University of Hartford). Mike spent his entire career working in the wholesale wine and spirits industry, retiring as District Sales Manager at Hartley and Parker, Ltd.

    In 1941, Mike married the love of his life, Blanche Martino. They began married life in Hartford, but the lure of the shore drew them to Old Saybrook in the early 1960’s, where Mike became a founding member of the North Cove Yacht Club. In addition, he was a lifetime Elk member, member of the Old Saybrook Historical Society, the Essex Corinthian Yacht Club, and a communicant and usher of St. John Church. He was one of the last surviving members of Hartford’s Blue Ridge club. Mike loved boating, fishing, playing poker, set-back, pool and golf, as well as spending winters in Florida.

    In 2005, Mike and Blanche moved to Essex Meadows, where he especially enjoyed his Wednesday night pub group and spending time with his brother, Phil. Mike’s bright smile and sense of humor won him many friends, and he loved flirting with the health center staff.

    The family would like to thank the entire staff at Essex Meadows Health Center for their loving, compassionate care.

    Mike is survived by his loving, devoted son David Gallicchio and his wife Julia of Old Saybrook; brother Philip and his wife Ann, of Glastonbury; sister Mary Sullivan of East Hartford; brother Victor, of Arizona and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Nicholas and sister Theresa.

    A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday, July 20 at 9 am at St. Mark’s Church, 222 McVeigh Rd.,Westbrook, with burial in Cypress Cemetery, Old Saybrook. Visit www.swanfuneralhomeoldsaybrook.com for condolences and tributes. The Swan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
