Peter Mason Shanley, 78, of Essex, beloved husband of Judy (Brown) Shanley, died Sept. 8. He was born May 1, 1935 in Shelton to Gertrude Mason Shanley and Howard Shanley. Peter attended Fairfield Preparatory School and was a graduate of Milford High School and the University of Connecticut class of 1956. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Peter was a businessman, entrepreneur, and founder and CEO of Sloan and Company, a large specialty contracting company in West Caldwell, New Jersey. He enjoyed traveling, adventures, boating, entertaining and spending time with his family. Peter was a member of the New York Athletic Club, the Pelican Club and the Essex Yacht Club, and was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters Elizabeth Mason Lewis and Christine Martin Shanley; his step-children Dori Hutchinson and her husband Kirk, David Stauss, James Stauss and his wife Anne, and Timothy Stauss and his wife Anna; and his step-grandchildren Ted Hutchinson, Meg Hutchinson, Will Hutchinson, Jack Stauss, Mattie Stauss, Kate Stauss, Liam Stauss, Heidy Stauss, Nathaniel Stauss and Henry Stauss.

A memorial mass will be held Saturday, Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Essex. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
