Betty (Marple) Schmidt, 92, of Chester, died Nov. 24. She was born in Philadelphia, and lived most her life in Hamilton Township, New Jersey. While attending Cedar Crest College she met Darwin, her life’s love and partner. They celebrated 68 years of marriage before his death in 2011.

Vigorously curious, she was a prolific reader, knitter and organizer, and a woman of great will power.

She is survived by her brother George Marple; her children Barbara Macgregor and her husband Alan of Essex, and Paul Schmidt and his wife Debby; granddaughters Lyn and her husband Ted Halsted, Nancy and her husband Dennis Lange, and Courtney; and great-granddaughters Caroline and Jillian Halsted, whom she always described as “extraordinary!”

A memorial service will be held Dec. 14 at 1 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Essex. The Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, Centerbrook, is in charge of arrangements. To share a memory of Betty, or for more information visit rwwfh.com.
