    Michael 'Mic-Dev' DiVerniero, 56, East Haven

    Michael “Mic-Dev” DiVerniero, 56, of East Haven, passed away April 14 at Connecticut Hospice. He was born June 28, 1957, in New Haven to Owen and Helen (Boyle) DiVerniero. Michael is survived by mother Helen of Branford; loving wife of 18 years Julie (Anastasio) DiVerniero; and two daughters Ellyn and Aimee DiVerniero. Mic-Dev is also survived by brothers Stephen DiVerniero (Ellen) of Hamden and Joseph DiVerniero (Laura) of East Haven; sisters Beth Fortuna (James) of Hamden and MaryRose Wiesner (Scott) of Monrovia, California; and three nephews and two nieces.

    Mic-Dev graduated from Southern Connecticut State University in 1979 with a BA in social work. He was employed at ACES for 34 years, where he touched the lives of many students. He was an All-State swimmer at Branford High School in 1975. While at SCSU, he excelled in water polo as a goal tender. He was twice selected to the All New England Water Polo team. Mic’s greatest thrill in life was coaching swimming. His passion for coaching created a lifetime legacy. After serving as an assistant for the Orange Otter Swim Team from 1987 to 1989, he started the Orange Swim Club and eventually founded the Amity Regional Aquatic Club in 1995. During his tenure at ARAC, he developed the program into one of the finest Age Group swim teams in the state of Connecticut. He was twice voted Connecticut Age Group Coach of the year. He also served for 25 years as Co-Head Coach of the Paradise County Club in Hamden with his brother Steve. He was largely responsible for helping to build that program into a swimming dynasty, winning 24 championships in 21 years.

    Family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. April 21 at the Clancy Funeral Home, 43 Kirkham Ave., East Haven. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on April 22 at St. Vincent de Paul Church, East Haven. Burial will be private.
