‘An independent voice for you as state Senator’

Today, many voters do not feel heard. They don’t feel as if their voice matters in our politics. As each year goes by the far extremes of both political parties get louder and louder and drown out more moderate voices. Partisanship is on the rise and politicians coming together to work for the people seems like a thing of the past to many. In Connecticut, a large percentage of voters are unaffiliated, belonging to no party. Even many of those who are either Democrat or Republican believe themselves to be moderate and willing to hear from both sides. I am writing today to those voters. I want you to know that you have a voice in me.

This election I have had the honor of being endorsed not just by the Republican party, but the Independent party as well. Many voters are tired of the two-party political system and want someone who will fight for them, not their party. Despite the desperate fear mongering campaign being waged by my opponent in her mailings, attempting to paint me as someone I am not, I promise to be an independent voice for you as state Senator. This very newspaper described me as a “centrist” and that is exactly what I am.

Like many Republicans I believe in lower taxes, less government overreach and free market economics. But I do not agree with them on everything. I will always defend a woman's right to choose. I support the common sense gun laws that were passed after the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. Laws that were opposed by some in my party. I will not go to Hartford to be a partisan voice. If a bill comes across my desk that I think is good for the people of our district, then it will have my support.

Independent thought is critical in our politics if we want to get this state back on track. Should I win in November, I am ready and willing to work with my other 35 colleagues whoever they may be in order to make this state better. Common sense and putting people over politics is the theme of my campaign and that is exactly the approach I will bring every day to Hartford.

Jerry Labriola Jr., of Old Saybrook, is a candidate for state Senator of the 20th Dstrict.
