The Day's Election Year Candidate Op-Ed Policy

    [naviga:ul]

[naviga:li]The Day welcomes written commentaries from candidates for public office. Candidates will be limited to one commentary every 60 days. The Day will not publish candidate commentaries within one week of a primary or general election.[/naviga:li]

[naviga:li]The Day encourages commentaries that describe a candidate’s positions on public policy and the steps he or she intends to take to implement such policy. It discourages commentaries that largely attack an opponent’s opinion or record, rather than putting forth the candidate’s own message. [/naviga:li]

[naviga:li]Opinion pieces will be limited to no more than 650 words. The Day’s editorial staff reserves the right to make grammatical changes.[/naviga:li]

[naviga:li]While The Day strives to provide all candidates with a fair forum, the newspaper reserves the right to reject any commentary that does not adhere with its policies, which it judges to be in poor taste, or which is otherwise considered inappropriate. [/naviga:li]

[naviga:li]The timing of publication is strictly up to the discretion of the editorial page staff based on space availability. The Day cannot guarantee the publication of all commentaries it receives, particularly if the editorial staff receives a rush of commentaries as the election approaches. [/naviga:li]

[naviga:li]This policy is in place only for the current election cycle. A different policy will be instituted for local election cycles. [/naviga:li]

[naviga:li]Candidates can direct questions to Editorial Page Editor Paul Choiniere (860-701-4306, p.choiniere@theday.com) or Associate Editorial Page Editor Ann Baldelli (860-701-4360, a.baldelli@theday.com).[/naviga:li]
