    • Jillian Ortega has been named the head coach of the Mitchell College softball team, athletic director Maureen White announced on Tuesday.

Ortega, who coached New London High School last season, will make her collegiate head coaching debut with the Mariners. She was also a student assistant at UConn, her alma mater, for a year.

Ortega was a three-year all-Big East infielder at UConn, batting .323 for her career. She is fifth in school history in home runs (19) and RBI (105) and third in doubles (38).

    UConn's Rhine passes away

    • Former UConn men's soccer great Bobby Rhine suffered a heart attack Monday and passed away at the age of 35.

Rhine, a 1998 UConn graduate, was a two-time All-American and UConn's first-ever selection in the Major League Soccer Draft. He was chosen sixth by Miami in 1999. He finished his career as UConn's seventh all-time leading scorer with 42 goals and 20 assists for 104 points. Rhine was just one of eight players in program history to reach the 100-point plateau.

"He was a fantastic player and an even greater person. I had a great relationship with him. He was a terrific man. His smile was just magnetic to anyone around him. He will surely be missed," said current UConn head coach Ray Reid.

"I was fortunate enough to have met him and coached him when I first started at UConn in 1997. He was a senior when I came in and decided to redshirt and complete his last season as a graduate student in 1998 working on his master's degree. He was the centerpiece of our 1998 team that reached the NCAA Tournament," added Reid.

Rhine went on to play professionally for nearly a decade and most recently served as the broadcast announcer for FC Dallas of the MLS.
