    Roundup: Mitchell women beat Eastern Nazarene 2-1

    Eastern Nazarene defender Cara Reiley (3) battles Mitchell College's Nina Giansanti in the air during Monday's college soccer game in New London. The Mariners scored a pair of second-half goals and held on for a 2-1 victory, their second win of the young season.

    New London — Mitchell College's women's soccer team scored twice in the second half and survived a late attack by Eastern Nazarene to earn a 2-1 victory on Monday afternoon.

    Maariyah Lombardo, a freshman, scored in the 59th minute and senior Nikki Hoxie scored in the 79th minute for Mitchell (2-1), making it 2-0.

    Eastern Nazarene pulled to within 2-1 on a goal by Juliana Speno with just over three minutes remaining, but couldn't get the equalizer.

    Sophomore goalie Kaylee Woodford of Niantic finished with a season-high eight saves for Mitchell.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Kelli Connors had 10 assists, an ace, a block and a dig and Christine Hadfield two aces, seven kills, three blocks and 10 receptions as Waterford topped New London 25-21, 25-15, 25-16. Waterford is 2-1. Eiyona Gonzalez had three kills and one ace for New London (1-1), Arlene Martinez two kills, one ace and three blocks and Diana Montalvo two aces and three assists.

    • Michelle Klinikowski and Kylie Fustini combined for 14 kills as Ledyard swept Killingly 25-18, 25-23, 25-16. Fustini also had five aces for the Colonels (2-1) and Jenny Nohara added 11 assists.

    • Natalie Bowen had five kills and Cassidy Bundy six blocks to lift Montville to a 3-1 victory over Windham, winning the final two games. Game scores were 25-18, 9-25, 25-21, 25-18. Montville, now coached by Becky Alfonso, is 2-1 overall.

    • Bailey Spellman and Kayla Royce each had 19 service points as Norwich Tech blanked Prince Tech 25-9, 25-8, 25-16 in the Constitution State Conference. Bailey Spellman added 11 assists and three aces, Royce six aces and Janiellee Alvarez had nine service points, five aces and seven kills for Norwich Tech (1-1, 1-0).

    • Hannah Gumbs had eight aces and Liz Santana five aces and one assist for Grasso Tech in a 25-12, 25-9, 25-14 victory over Ellis Tech in the CSC. Mary Murphy added three assists and a kill for Grasso (1-1, 1-0).

    • Amanda Burke had nine kills and three blocks to lead Old Lyme to a 25-18, 27-25, 22-25, 25-14 win over Cromwell in the Shoreline Conference. Allie Fiscus had eight assists for Old Lyme.

    • Emily Peay had 13 kills and Allison Tacchi added 11 but Lyman Memorial was beaten by Plainfield, 25-23, 16-25, 27-25, 25-21. Emily Vigue had six aces for Lyman (1-2).

    H.S. field hockey

    • Joanie Haling scored three goals for the second game in a row and Fitch blanked Windham 6-0 in a nonleague game. Paige Vinson added two goals and Kendra Blomstedt scored for the Falcons (2-1).

    H.S. boys' soccer

    • Aaron Schwartz had two goals and Marco Roberto scored on a penalty kick with 30 seconds left before halftime as Waterford shut out Griswold 3-0. Brandon Wilson made 15 saves in goal for Waterford (1-0-1). Griswold is 0-3.

    • Frank Norosky scored two minutes into the second half, sparking a run of five unanswered Fitch goals in a 5-1 victory over Killingly. Norosky finished with three goals and an assist and Dan Mewha and Martin Alfaro added goals for the Falcons (2-0), who trailed 1-0 at halftime. Adam Jacey had six saves in the win.

    • Matt Midder made nine saves in goal in St. Thomas More's 2-0 season-opening loss to Marianapolis Prep.

    H.S. girls' soccer

    • Emily Hamilton and Cassidy Taylor scored three goals apiece and The Williams School defeated Providence Country Day 6-1. Catherine Malcynsky made five saves for Williams.

    • Tamixa Sandoval made six saves in goal in New London's 1-0 loss at Derby.

    Girls' cross country

    • Jackie Burr was second in 20 minutes, 42 seconds as Westerly split a tri-meet, beating Narragansett 15-48, but falling to South Kingstown 20-38. Westerly's Maddy McLaughlin was sixth on the 3.1-mile course at Curtis Corner Middle School in South Kingstown in 21:40, Rachel Orlando eighth in 22:14, Adeline Hanseen 10th in 22:28 and Carlie Sisco 12th in 23:37.

    H.S. rowing

    • The East Lyme High School team won bronze medals in the men's and women's junior fours with coxswain, as well as a silver medal in the open mixed fours at the Mystic Coastweeks Regatta on Sunday.

    More than 30 schools and clubs with more than 200 boats raced in the annual event that draws participants from as far away as Virginia and is considered the fall season opener for many rowing teams throughout the northeast.

    East Lyme athletes included Josie Roosli, Olivia Durham, Ada Mice, Kathleen Loubier, Lauren Ward, Jameson Foulke, Sean Lambert, Ryeed Khan, Ian Shukis, Lily Duong, Sarah Kukich, Andy Keens and Ehren Johnson.

    College volleyball

    • Connecticut College senior outside hitter Amy Newman was honored as the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Volleyball Player of the Week. Newman averaged 5.0 kills and 2.8 digs per set while hitting at a .336 rate in a 2-1 week that featured a 3-1 win over Williams and a 3-0 victory over Hamilton.

    Local golf

    • Rose Petersen of Old Lyme scored her first hole-in-one Tuesday, Sept. 13, on ladies' day at Fox Hopyard. Petersen aced the 16th hole, witnessed by Adrienne Brennan, Ellen Wells and Pat McCarthy.
