    Local roundup: Ledyard girls beat St. Bernard on opening night

    Montville - Michelle Klinikowski had 18 points as Ledyard High School defeated St. Bernard Wednesday, 47-35, on opening night of the high school girls' basketball season.

    Ledyard used an 18-3 second-quarter advantage to pull away.

    Kylie Fustini had 10 points for Ledyard.

    Kayla Paris had 20 points, seven rebounds and seven steals for the Saints. Casey Sullivan added 13 points.

    In other games:

    • Emily Peay had 25 rebounds and scored 11 points to help lead Lyman Memorial to a 64-42 win over Somers in a nonleague game. Emily Von Edwins had 12 points and 10 rebounds, Briana Padewski scored 13, Alyson Tacchi had 16 rebounds, Casey Kelley had 10 points and Peay also had five assists and five blocked shots for Lyman.

    • Kayla McAvoy scored 13 points and had 12 rebounds, leading Old Saybrook to a 41-36 win over Portland in a Shoreline Conference game. Mia Neas scored 16 points for Old Saybrook, which led 35-20 after three quarters. Sarah Bierly led Portland with 18 points.

    • Haddam-Killingworth jumped out to a 27-16 halftime lead and went on to beat Old Lyme 58-34 in a Shoreline Conference game. Lyla Stanland had 13 points and Nikki Strizzi scored 10 for Old Lyme.

    • Hartford University overcame a 10-2 first quarter deficit to defeat Holy Family 38-33. Kelsey Wilson and Mary Roberts led the Marists with 11 points apiece.

    • Jessica Deschamps had a game-high 12 points and Kaitlyn Mitchell added seven points and and four steals as Norwich Tech beat Whitney Tech of Hamden, 35-26, in the Constitution State Conference. Kianna Relliford had four points and five rebounds for Norwich Tech and Nicole Gressly had three assists.

    • Grasso Tech lost to Ellis Tech in a CSC East Division game. Jayne Morris led Grasso with 10 points. Jordan Garrett had a game-high 14 points for Ellis.

    • Wheeler (R.I.) held off Williams for a 34-33 victory in the Blues' season opener. Capri DeBiccari scored 12 points for Williams while Marion Philippe added 10 points and 13 rebounds.

    H.S. boys' basketball

    • Brandon Cunningham scored 19 points and Josh Smiley had 17 points, leading Pomfret to a 65-53 win over St. Thomas More. Colin Roberts and Seamus Douglas scored 11 points each for T-More.

    Men's basketball

    • New London's Torin Childs-Harris scored all 14 of his points, including four 3-pointers, in the final 10 minutes as St. Thomas More rallied from a 19-point deficit to beat South Kent, 89-83, in a battle of unbeatens. The Chancellors (6-0) made eight 3s in the second half to wipe out a 67-48 deficit. A.J. English led T-More with 19 points while Ky Howard added 14 points and eight rebounds.

    Women's basketball

    • UConn-Avery Point's Becca Pope was named the NJCAA Division III Player of the Week. Pope had her first two double-doubles of the season as the Pointers went 2-0. She scored a school-record 35 points and had 16 rebounds against Gateway CC and scored 18 with 15 rebounds against Holyoke CC. The Pointers (7-1) were credited with a forfeit win over Lincoln College Wednesday.

    Women's hockey

    • Molly Murphy's goal with 15 minutes remaining rallied Connecticut College to 2-2 tie with Holy Cross (9-1-2) at Dayton Arena. Jilliank Dolliff also scored for the Camels (1-3-1), Courtney Dumoont assisted on Murphy's goal and goalie Kelsie Fralick stopped 25 shots.

    College wrestling

    • Coast Guard Academy freshman Nate Giorgio had the Bears' lone win in a 37-6 loss to Roger Williams in the Pilgrim League opener for both schools. Giorgio, ranked sixth in the nation at 125 pounds, won by pin at 6:03. In the closest match, Virgil Moreno of CGA lost in overtime to Jack DiBurro at 174.
