Waterford advances to New England Babe Ruth final

Quincy, Mass. — Waterford advanced to the championship round of the New England Babe Ruth 15-year-old baseball tournament on Monday with a 6-3 victory over Keene (N.H.).

The District 6 and Connecticut representatives improved 3-0 in the double-elimination tournament and will play either Keene, Pittsfield (Mass.) or host Quincy in the title round on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. A deciding game, if necessary, would follow.

Waterford needs only one win to reach the Babe Ruth World Series in Van Buren, Arkansas.

Jesse Coates had the big hit for Waterford, a two-run single in the fifth inning to snap a 2-2 tie. Pitcher Mike McDermott went the distance, scattering eight hits and striking out four. He also picked off a pair of baserunners.
