Cleveland — Former East Lyme High School star John McDonald was designated for assignment by Cleveland on Wednesday after the Indians activiated shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera from the 15-day disabled list.
McDonald, a utility infielder, joined the Indians on June 10 in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash and/or a player to be named later.
Cleveland has 10 days to trade or release the 38-year-old McDonald, although the Indians could assign him to the minor leagues if he clears waivers.
