    Local roundup: UConn earns return trip to NCAA field hockey final

    College Park, Md. - Defending champion UConn advanced to the finals of the NCAA Division I field hockey tournament on Friday with a 1-0 victory over Albany.

    The third-seeded Huskies (19-2) will play Syracuse, a 3-2 winner over No. 1 North Carolina, for the national championship on Sunday at 1 p.m. The two teams haven't played since the 2012 Big East tournament final, which UConn won 4-3 on a goal by Chloe Hunnable in the final minute. The Orange are now members of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

    UConn, making its sixth appearance in the final, will be seeking its fourth championship.

    Hunnable scored the game's only goal Friday, her 10th of the season, only three minutes, 16 seconds into the contest. Chrissy Davidson collected a bouncing ball in the middle of the circle and hit a shot that popped up into the air and allowed Hunnable to tap the ball into the goal. It was Davidson's 25th of the season.

    Freshman goalie Nina Klein made five saves for the shutout as the Huskies won their 13th straight game.

    H.S. football

    • Rafael Lebron threw four touchdown passes and ran for a fifth as Cheney Tech defeated St. Bernard/Norwich Tech 52-26. Thurston Brown had a big game for the Saints (1-9). He caught touchdown passes of 46 and 24 yards from Jared Neal and returned a kickoff 85 yards for a third touchown. Matt Martinez added a 2-yard yard touchdown run. Brown finished with five receptions for 92 yards, Steve Sieczkowski caught four passes for 96 yards and Neal completed 15 of 25 passes for 276 yards. Cheney finishes 8-3.

    Men's hockey

    • Freshmen Johnny Austin and Spencer Naas both scored as UConn edged 11th-ranked Vermont, 2-1, its third win this season over a nationally ranked opponent. Rob Nichols had 23 saves for the Huskies (3-5-4, 2-2-1 Hockey East). Anthony Petruzzelli scored for the Catamounts (7-3-1, 5-3-1).

    • David Jarrett scored with six minutes left in the game to lift Williams to a 2-1 win over Conn College. C.J. Shugart scored and Craig Kitto had two assists for the Ephs (2-0-1). Greg Liataud scored for the Camels (1-2) and Tom Conlin had 35 saves.

    Women's hockey

    • Amelia Dineen scored the game-tying goal with 1:44 left in regulation as Conn College played Hamilton to a 3-3 overtime tie in a NESCAC game. Conn (1-0-2, 1-0-2) trailed 3-1 with over 13 minutes left in regulation when the Camels' Ashley Anctil scored to pull her team within a goal of the Continentals. Stephanie Izzi scored for Conn and Kelsie Fralick had 18 saves.

    Men's basketball

    • Senior Eli Sponseller had a career-high 16 points to pace Coast Guard past Framingham State, 56-33, in the first round of Moe's Queso Classic at Regis College. Junior Kevin Alvarez scored 15 and classmate David Anderson added 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for Coast Guard (2-1), who'll play Regis in today's championship game at 4 p.m. Regis beat Thomas, 64-59.

    • Christian Vital had a game-high 20 points with nine rebounds and two assists as St. Thomas More beat ELEV-8 Academy, 81-71, at the National Prep Showcase at Albertus Magnus.

    Ian Gardener had 13 points and eight rebounds for T-More and Ryan Funk added 11 points, five rebounds and an assist.

    • Connecticut College used a 10-0 run in the third overtime to outlast Yeshiva University 96-87 on Thursday night in New York. Freshman Isaiah Robinson led the Camels (2-1) with 25 ponis and seven rebounds while Lee Messier added 15 points, Bo McKinley 12 and Zuri Pavlin had 14 points and 17 reboundsd, his third straight double-double. It was Pavlin who got the game to a third overtime when he converted three straight free throws with three seconds left in the second overtime to tie the game at 80-80.
