    Local roundup: Williams swimming is a Legg up in sweep of tri-meet

    Waterbury - Jordan Legg and Will Jarrett won two individual events each and were on two winning relay teams as the Williams School swimming team picked up a pair of wins on Wednesday.

    The Blues beat host Chase Collegiate 53-41 and Ethel Walker 49-45. Legg broke the school record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5 minutes, 4.01 seconds and also won the 200 IM in 2:12.13. Jarrett won the 200 freestyle (2:01.56) and 100 breaststroke (1:16.12).

    Hartmut Doerwaldt won the 100 backstroke for Williams, which won all three relays. Josh Goldstein, Jarrett, Grace Linhares and Legg won the 200 medley relay; Andrew Little, Kaela Milewski, Linhares and Doerwaldt won the 200 freestyle relay and Goldstein, Jarrett, Doerwaldt and Legg won the 400 freestyle relay.

    H.S. wrestling

    • Waterford had four pins en route to a 43-33 win over St. Bernard/Norwich Tech in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Small Division. Sam Lindblom (138 pounds), Spencer Sgandurra (152), Dillon McCarthy (170) and Ben Pickowitz (195) had the pins and Luther Wade (126) and Jake Botseas (160) also won matches for Waterford (9-7, 3-1). Mario Lin (132) and Robert Newton (285) had pins for St. Bernard (3-7, 1-2) and teammates Matt Dowler (120) and Nick Roch (182) also won their matches.

    • Ledyard recorded five pins and won seven other matches by forfeit, beating East Lyme 75-6 in the ECC Large Division. Samuel Cummings (132), Mason Kimmery (145), Mikey Sullivan (195), Daric Johnson (220) and Dwayne Brown (285) had pins for Ledyard (10-2, 4-0), which also got a win at 152 from Josh Rahal. Jason Williams won by pin at 106 for East Lyme (3-8, 0-2).

    • Tommy Wynosky of Montville topped Griswold's Zac Cassidy by a 5-1 decision at 132 pounds in a matchup of two placewinners from last year's Class S state championship meet. Montville defeated Griswold 51-20 in the ECC Small Division. Wynosky was third last year at 126 pounds, while Cassidy was fourth at 132. Zach Looney (125), Austin Concascia (145), Ian Concascia (171), Emmanuel Diaz (185) and Nick Tibbetts (195) all had pins for Montville (12-3, 3-1) and Sam Kury (138) and Augustine Cornish earned decisions.

    H.S. boys' basketball

    • Peter Berndt scored 24 points as St. Thomas More beat Williams School 50-44. Jack Fader had 15 points at Jake Parizo scored 14 for Williams.

    H.S. girls' basketball

    • Marissa Shirshac scored a career-high 20 points as Windham Tech beat Grasso Tech 68-31 in a Constitution State Conference game. Preonna Boyd-Cannon had 15 points and Keila LaStraglio scored 12 for Grasso Tech.

    • Norwich Tech lost to Wilcox Tech in a CSC game 44-25. Madison Bodley had nine points and five steals for Norwich Tech (0-5).

    • Kiah Strickland scored 18 points, leading Montville to a 50-29 win over Wheeler on Tuesday. Taylor LaVallie had 10 points for Montville (5-5) and Mackenzie Brayma had 12 points and eight rebounds for Wheeler (3-7).

    Men's basketball

    • Matt Redfield had 14 points and 15 rebounds, leading MIT to a 62-36 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game. Kevin Alvarez had eight points and six rebounds for Coast Guard (5-9, 1-2), which shot a season-low 22.8 percent from the field (13-for-57). Ryan Frankel had a game-high 16 points and five assists for MIT (10-3, 3-0).

    H.S riflery

    • Mack Foster scored a match-high 183 as Grasso Tech beat Wilcox Tech 856-829 in the CSC. Dino Broccoli had 178, Zach Ivory had 167, John Meers had 165 and Lilanna Vazquez shot 163 for Grasso (2-1, 2-0), which got perfect scores from Broccoli (prone) and Foster (sitting).

    H.S. squash

    • Williams School opened its season with a 6-1 loss to Pomfret on Tuesday. Oliver Falla won at No. 2 for Williams.
