    Local roundup: Bennett wins O'Keefe Memorial Strides Race

    Waterford — Todd Bennett of Norwich won the Jack O'Keefe Memorial Strides 10K race on Sunday.

    Lauren Leslie of Warwick, R.I., was the top women's finisher in the race and David Shuck of New Hampshire and Alyssa Bannon of Clinton were the top finishers in the 5K race. Bennett ran a 37:31 and Leslie finished fourth at 42:54. Shuck finished in 17:31 and Bannon was ninth in 20:56.

    The top 10 in the 10K also included Brad Overturf, Dan Henderson of Waterford, Cindy Ouillette, George Adrian of Groton, Matthew Hargus of Pawcatuck, Tom Sullivan of Groton, Dana Merise of Norwich and Waterford's Desmond Harris.

    The top 10 in the 5K also included Jeff Walker of Westerly, Scott Grandfield, Jeremy Burke of Waterford, Matthew Labreque of Waterford, Andrew Orum, Dylan Sullivan of Waterford, Allen Litwin of Niantic and Bob Edgecomb of Waterford.

    In another race:

    • Pawcatuck's Steven DeCastro won his hometown race on Satruday, capturing the St. Michael School 5K on Saturday with a time of 20:32. Jennifer Massengale of Mystic was second in 20:58, taking the women's title in 20:58.

    Also finishing in the top 10 were Sean Law of Mystic, Tommy Belchik of Pawcatuck, Brendan Toth of Mystic, Nial Duherg of Pawcatuck, Nate Hennessy of Pawcatuck, Paul Andruskiewicz of Preston, Steve Bailey and David Bessette of Pawcatuck.

    Women's soccer

    • Emily Hester scored a pair of goals, leading Amherst to a 3-0 win over Connecticut College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Alex Santiago made seven saves for Conn (1-5-3, 0-3-3).

    Field hockey

    • Charlotte Veitner scored four goals as No. 1 UConn beat Yale 8-0 in a nonleague game. Casey Umstead had a goal and two assists for the Huskies (11-0).

    Sailing

    • Charlotte List of Conn College qualified for the Singlehanded National Championship. List, a sophomore skipper, placed fourth at the New England Singlehanded Championship at Boston College. The nationals are Nov. 6-8 at Norfolk, Va. Conn's coed team finished fourth in the Hewitt Trophy Regatta.

    Football

    • St. Thomas More lost to Kingswood-Oxford on Saturday, 30-12. Former Ledyard standout Leo Clinton had a two-yard touchdown run and Juwon Grant caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Rob Madison for T-More.

    H.S. cross country

    • Williams School competed in the O'Connell Invitational at Cheshire Academy on Saturday. The girls' team finished eighth, with Mary Madaus leading the way in 24th place. The boys' team was ninth, led by Will Jarrett's seventh-place finish.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Montville beat Ellis Tech in a nonleague match on Friday, 25-15, 25-22, 25-17. Christi Johnson had 11 digs, Karlee Rewers had three kills and Olivia Fargo had 10 digs and six aces for Montville (6-4).
