Local roundup: Stonington, East Lyme advance to field hockey quarters

Stonington — The Stonington High School field hockey team played its last regular-season game two weeks ago.

Coach Jenna Tucchio is hoping that with Tuesday’s win in the first round of the Class S state tournament, 3-0 over No. 13 Northwest Catholic, will help the Bears get back to a more normal, less nervous frame of mind.

No. 4 Stonington meets No. 12 Canton in the quarterfinals at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Stonington. The Bears have made it to at least the semifinals each of the last three seasons, winning the state championship in 2013.

“They played hard and they played well, but you could definitely see the hesitation,” Tucchio said. “They’re trying to be ultra-conservative and you can’t do that. It’s the state tournament. … We went and scrimmaged Guilford (during the layoff). We went and scrimmaged Branford. But you can’t simulate the intensity, the feeling you get when you play a real game.”

Margit Burgess scored a first-half goal for No. 4 Stonington (13-1-3). Trinity Lennon scored in the second half from Abby Blanchard and Emma Miller added the final goal on a penalty corner from Blanchard and Abby Flakus.

    In other games:

    • Cara Bradley accounted for all four goals in No. 2 East Lyme's 4-0 shutout of No. 15 Windsor in the Class M first round. Hannah LeBeau had two assists and Katie Durkee added one for the Vikings (14-2-1), who will host No. 7 New Canaan in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

    Boys' soccer

    • No. 3 Old Lyme survived an uneven performance in the Class S first round, riding first-half goals from Nate Peduzzi and Danny Reid to a 2-1 win over No. 30 Portland. Graham Aird added an assist and goalie Cam Dean-Frazier made two saves for the Wildcats (15-1-3), who will host No. 14 Cromwell at 2 p.m. on Thursday in the second round. Old Lyme won the regular season meeting between the two Shoreline Conference teams, 3-1.

    • Jack Cullen's goal in the 71st minute lifted No. 24 Stonington to a 1-0 road win over No. 9 Northwestern Regional in the Class M first round. Shane Smith assisted on the goal for the Bears (9-9-2), who play at No. 8 Windham Tech in Thursday's second round at 2 p.m., while goalie Joey Rosa made three saves.

    • William Longo scored a pair of goals in the first 13 minutes and No. 17 Ellington, the defending state champion, went on to defeat No. 16 Norwich Tech 2-0 in the Class M first round. Goalie Ian Hubbert made 10 saves in goal for the Warriors, who finish 9-7-2.

    • Zach Vandale scored the only goal for No. 12 East Lyme in a 4-1 loss to No. 21 Pomperaug in the Class L first round. Vandale's goal came about nine minutes into the second half and cut the gap to 2-1. But the Vikings gave up an own goal about a minute and a half later and never recovered. Goalie Mike Trailor made six saves for East Lyme (13-6-1).
