    High school roundup: Burrows pitches Waterford past Montville

    Waterford — Sophomore Michael Burrows pitched a two-hitter as Waterford High School beat Montville 10-1 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division baseball game Saturday afternoon.

    Burrows struck out eight and also doubled for the Lancers (3-0, 3-0). Kevin Johnson singled, doubled and drove in three runs and Justin Keating (two runs) and Collin Bakken had two hits each for Waterford.

    TT Bowens homered in the fourth inning for Montville (2-1, 2-1), which was ranked fifth in the New Haven Register preseason media poll. Montville beat Killingly 14-6 in an ECC Medium game on Friday. Tommy McDonald was 3-for-4 with three RBI, Quentin Duperry was 3-for-3 and Seamus Barry (two triples) and Ryan Champagne both had three RBI, two runs and scored twice for Montville.

    In other games:

    • John Moody pitched five innings and went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored as Stonington topped Wheeler 10-0. Ben Dellacono added a double and two RBI for the Bears (1-2), which won their first game under new coach Bob Cahoone.

    • Old Lyme opened its season with a 14-2 win over Old Saybrook in a Shoreline Conference game. Will Visgilio pitched a four-hitter for the win and was backed by a 13-hit attack. Callum Sawden had three doubles and drove in four runs, Cooper St. Germain singled, doubled, scored four times and drove in three runs, Jace Funaro had two hits and scored three runs and Ryan Dubord doubled and drove in two runs for Old Lyme.  

    • Luke Saccone went 4-for-4, including two triples, with three runs and three RBI as Ledyard beat Norwich Tech 9-1. Cade Walters allowed two hits over six innings with 11 strikeouts for the Colonels (2-0) and Anthony Viteritto went 2-for-3, including a double, with two RBI. Brandon Bastien doubled for Norwich Tech (0-1).

    • East Lyme fell to RHAM 6-1. Matt Spang doubled and drove in a run and Alex Tyron scored a run and stole a base for East Lyme (0-3).

    Softball

    • Mikaela LoPriore pitched a four-hit shutout as East Lyme topped Granby 2-0. LoPriore struck out three and walked a batter for East Lyme (2-1), while Alexandra Chambers had three hits and scored a run.

    • Senior pitcher Caroline Taber allowed one hit over six innings as Fitch topped Coventry, R.I., 12-0. Taber struck out 14 and walked two. Taylor Wolfgang led the offense, going 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI and Cassie Woods added a homer, two RBI and two runs scored. Fitch is 3-0.

    • Amanda Perkins went 4-for-5 with a home run and scored three times, leading Montville to a 14-4 win over Norwich Tech. Alex Clemons was 2-for-4 with a three-run triple, Jazlin Fitch went 3-for-4 and Lexi Kobyluck pitched a five-hitter for Montville (1-1).

    Girls' tennis

    • Old Lyme won three of the four singles matches and held on to beat Valley Regional 4-3 in a Shoreline Conferenece match. Keelin Hurtt, Emily Brault and Brynn McGlinchey had straight-set wins and for Old Lyme and teammates Marissa Smith and Shannon Nosal won at No. 1 doubles.

    • Waterford swept singles play en route to a 6-1 win over East Lyme in an ECC Large Division match on Friday. Alaina Moger, Sophie Wang, Sara Verity and Sophie Impellitteri won for Waterford (1-1, 1-1) as did the doubles teams of Stacy Tasulas-Catherine Yao and Tessa Dipollina-Margaret Lincoln. Ariel Plantz and Lily Slemp won at No. 2 doubles for East Lyme (1-1, 0-1).

    Boys' track

    • Will DeMott won the 400-meter dash in 53.18 seconds to pace Old Lyme to fifth place at the Bellringer Inviational at East Hampton High School. The Wildcats had 49 points and Montville took seventh with 41.5 points. Old Saybrook finished first with 221.

    Montville's Dawson Milbauer was third in the triple jump (40 feet, 3 inches) while the program's 4x100 relay team of Gilbert Calash, Christian Longton, Jamir Johnson and Andrew Pethrick took third in 46.59. Kevin Murtha was third in the shot put (40-1) for the Indians while the 4x400 relay team of Lucas Chaude, Dawson Milbauer, Van Heller and Caleb Sheldon placed fourth (3:55.72).

    Old Lyme's 4x800 relay team of Gabriel Barclay, DeMott, James Kolb and Corey Knepshield took second in 8:45.38. Knepshield was second in the 800 (2:08.42) while Daniel Cole was second in the 3,200 (10:09.40) and Evan Deng was third in the 200 (24.90).

    Girls' track

    • Montville scored 51 points to finish fifth at the Bellringer Invitational at East Hampton High School. Old Lyme was 12th with 21 points. Old Saybrook won the meet with 172 points.

    Mady Whittaker was second in the 800 (2:34.92), Naomi Clark finished fourth in both the 100 hurdles (18.07) and pole vault (7-0) to lead the Indians. The 4x400 relay team of Whittaker, Lauren Ross, Emma Giurelo and Michaela MacCracken took third (4:33.70).

    Kokomoor, Moody feted

    • Sam Kokomoor and John Moody of the Fitch/Stonington boys' swimming team were selected as Academic All-Americans by the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches' Association. Their selection was based on a minimum GPA of 3.75, being a graduating senior and having lettered in swimming their senior year. Fitch/Stonington won the Eastern Connecticut Conference swimming and diving championship this season, its first since 2007, and Kokomoor was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer.
