    Local roundup: St. Bernard's Zuczek advances to Class S boys' tennis final

    West Hartford — Alex Zuczek of St. Bernard defeated Old Lyme’s Brendan White 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) in a battle of conference champions to win Wednesday’s CIAC Class S boys’ tennis tournament singles semifinal at Conard High School.

    It is the second straight season that Zuczek, seeded second, beat No. 3 White in the tournament.

    Zuczek, the Eastern Connecticut Conference champion, will play top-seeded Jonathan Miller of Housatonic Regional in Thursday’s championship match at the same site (2:30 p.m). Miller routed No. 4 Micah Fox of Ellington 6-1, 6-0 in his semifinal match and was last year’s runner-up.

    White won his third straight Shoreline Conference championship last week.

    Third-seeded Ethan Fenton and Austin Pilgrim of Old Lyme lost in the doubles semifinals 6-2, 7-5 to No. 2 Hunter Stone and Troy Romano.

    H.S. girls’ tennis

    • Top-seeded Stonington won all of its matches in straight sets in its 7-0 rout of No. 9 Old Saybrook in the Class S quarterfinals.

    Gabby Dellacono, Charlotte Johnstone, McKenzie Sadler and Margot Goodman all won at singles for the Bears (16-0).

    Claire Morehouse and Phoebe Townsend, Brielle Fratoni-Jaskiewicz and Hannah Middleton-Krancberg, and Holly Foster and Cassie Onorato won at doubles for Stonington.

    The Bears will play host to No. 12 Weston in today’s semifinals at 3 p.m. The Trojans downed No. 4 Litchfield, 6-1, in its quarterfinal match.

    H.S. softball

    • Down to its final two outs, the Wheeler softball team scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning and went on to beat Norwich Tech 6-1 in the second round of the Class S tournament. No. 9 Wheeler (16-5) plays at No. 1 Holy Cross in a quarterfinal game on Thursday at 2 p.m. Sam Muller (11-5) pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts and three walks, allowing an unearned run in the first inning. Nikki Collins was 3-for-4 for Wheeler. In the top of the seventh, Emma Stock drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 1-1. Lena Curland followed with a two-run double, Muller's groundout plated a fourth run and Collins and Kendra Perez added RBI singles. 

    • Caroline Taber pitched a four-hitter as No. 1 Fitch advanced to the Class L quarterfinals with a 5-2 win over No. 17 Hand in the second round. Taber struck out eight with one walk. Jayden Delaporta was 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI, Rylee MacMillan had two hits and scored twice and Taber scored twice for Fitch (24-0), which hosts No. 24 Mercy Thursday at 2:45 p.m.

    • Cameron Dreher went 2-for-3, including a two-run home run, with three RBI with two runs as No. 10 Stonington outslugged No. 7 Ellington, 10-6, in a Class M second round game. Brooke Arruda went 3-for-4, including a solo home run, for Stonington (19-5) and Trinity Lennon went 3-for-4, including a triple, and scored twice. Stonington will play at No. 2 Wilcox Tech on Thursday at 4 p.m. Wilcox Tech, the Constitution State Conference champion, beat league mate Kaynor Tech, 3-2, in its second round game. Ellington finished 18-5.

    • Beth Fleming pitched a three-hitter as No. 5 NFA beat No. 12 Conard 2-1 in a Class LL second-round game. Fleming struck out nine with two walks. Freshman Sara Cote was 3-for-3 for NFA (20-5) and had a run-scoring isngle in the fourth inning. Caitlyn deClerck, who had two hits, singled home an insurance run in the sixth. NFA plays at No. 4 Newtown in a quarterfinal on Thursday at 4 p.m.

    • Nicole Williams pitched a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts and had a single and a sacrifice fly as top-seeded St. Joseph beat No. 16 Waterford, 2-0, in a Class M second-round game. Hannah Hutchison had two hits, a run and an RBI for the Cadets (23-1), the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference champions. Claire Hurley singled to breaking a no-hitter in the top of the seventh and stole two bases for the Lancers (16-8).

    H.S. boys' lacrosse

    • Nick Campanelli had three goals and two assists as No. 9 North Haven beat Eastern Connecticut Conference champion East Lyme, 12-2, in a Class M first-round game. PJ Saracino scored four times for the Indians (10-7). Connor Schofner and Matt Boguszeski scored and Ryan deLaforcade had an assist for the No. 8 Vikings (11-8).

    • No. 2 Old Lyme lost to No. 18 St. Joseph 14-11 in the first round of the Class S tournament. Henry Hunt had four goals and three assists, Ryan Powers scored four times, Ian Humphreys had two goals and Gray Colvin had a goal and an assist for Old Lyme (16-3). 

    College sailing

    • Coast Guard Academy and Connecticut College qualified for the Gill Coed Sailing National Championship finals in San Diego. After two days of racing, the Bears captured first in the Western semifinal, finishing with 93 points, and the Camels placed sixth with 166.

    Eighteen teams advanced to the finals, which start today and end on Friday.

    Avery Fanning and Robert Turley are competing in the A Division for the Bears while Nikole Barnes and Anna Morin are the B Division duo.

    For Conn College, Bryce Kopp and Tori Allen are racing in the A Division while Hugh MacGillivray and Eliza Garry are competing in the B Division.

    "It was a good day for us," Conn coach Jeff Bresnahan said in a release. "We started the day a little slow but we really refocused."

    Women's water polo

    • Four members of the Connecticut College team were named to the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches All-America Team. Senior Kelsey Millward was a first-team selection and senior Abbey Wrobleski, junior Sarah Sovia and sophomore April Anderson received honorable mention. Millward had 92 goals, 16 assists, 33 earned ejections and eight steals. She is the only first-team pick in water polo in school history.
