    Local roundup: Waterford wins District 6 Babe Ruth (14) tournament

    Pawcatuck — Waterford captured the District 6 Babe Ruth 14-year-old baseball championship Tuesday with an 11-1 victory over Pawcatuck.

    The game was stopped after six innings due to the mercy rule.

    Trevor D'Amico pitched a complete game for Waterford, which went unbeaten in the tournament, scattering four hits. He also had three hits to lead the offense, while Anthony Tonucci added a pair of hits.

    Matt Castagliuoto and Nate Petriel each doubled for Pawcatuck.

    Pawcatuck, as the District 6 runner-up, also advanced to the state tournament, which Waterford will host beginning July 7. 

    District 6 Babe Ruth (13)

    • Waterford handed East Lyme its first loss, 7-1, to force a winner-take-all game for the district championship. The game will be played at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Veterans Field in Niantic. Logan Avin allowed only two hits over 5.2 innings for Waterford, while Will Rocchetti had two hits and two RBI, Preston Tabor had two hits and Jack Lathrop doubled.

    District 6 Babe Ruth (15)

    • East Lyme defeated New London 11-1 in a losers' bracket game shortened to six innings due to the mercy rule. Dylan McDonald allowed just one hit over 5.2 innings for East Lyme while Chris Abbey had two hits, including a double, drove in three runs and scored twice. McDonald also had a hit, RBI and three runs while Sophie Dubreuil had a hit and two runs and Noah Perry had a double. Jesus Escarraman had the lone hit for New London.

    District 10 baseball (11-12)

    • East Lyme defeated Lyme/Old Lyme 12-0 as winning pitcher Owen Elmer had eight strikeouts and also had three hits, including a home run. Chris Stevens added a grand slam for East Lyme while John Coffey had a double for Lyme/Old Lyme.

    • Mystic defeated Pawcatuck 17-0 as Dylan Meyer and Luke Norieka combined for the shutout. Meyer pitched three no-hit innings with six strikeouts and also had four hits, including two doubles and three RBI. Ethan Mireault added two hits, including a grand slam, with five RBI while Mikey Wagner had two hits (one a triple) with three RBI and Jackson LaLima drove in two runs. Austin Lee had a double for Pawcatuck.

    • Montville defeated Groton 3-0 as Miles Sarmiento pitched a two-hitter and struck out 12. He also had three hits and an RBI while Nathan Lowry allowed just five hits with six strikeouts for Groton.

    • Waterford defeated New London 3-2, scoring three times in the top of the six to overcome solo home runs by New London's Anthony Martinez and Ralphie Sanchez. Mason Concascia and Jackson Long had RBI doubles, Matty Uguccioni had an RBI single and Nate Hynes scored the go-ahead run for Waterford.

    District 10 baseball (10-11)

    • East Lyme defeated Mystic 7-4 on Monday night as winning pitcher Connor Tukey allowed only two hits over five innings, Alex Dreyfus and Anthony Como had two hits apiece, Niall Green had an RBI triple and Peter Sherwood an RBI double. Nathan Wagner had two hits for Mystic.

    District 10 baseball (9-10)

    • Mystic defeated Groton 11-0 in four innings as winning pitcher Trace Morales gave up just one hit while going 2-for-3 with four RBI. Griffin Pollard added a pair of doubles for Mystic while Brice Cowley had a single for Groton.

    District 10 softball (9-10)

    • Waterford defeated New London 20-4 in four innings as Alex Collins went 4-for-4 with an inside-the-park home run and scored four runs.

    Celebrity event at Dodd

    • The Connecticut Tigers announced that the Jeffrey Osborne Celebrity Softball Classic will be held on Sunday, Aug. 6, at Dodd Stadium. Osborne, a four-time Grammy Award winning singer, will lead a team of all-stars in the noon event. Among those scheduled to appear are basketball's Paul Pierce, James Worthy, Doc Rivers, John Starks and Rick Barry, NFL Hall Of Famers Eric Dickerson and Andre Reed and baseball's Ozzie Smith, Dave Stewart and Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd.

    A number of former New England Patriots — Steve Grogan, Ty Law, Joe Andruzzi, Jermaine Wiggins and Roland James — are expected to play along with celebrities Smokey Robinson, Chris Tucker, Cedric The Entertainer and Johnny Gill. Tickets are $14 for premium box seats, $12 for reserved seats and $10 for grandstand seats. There will be a $2 discount for military members and $1 discount for senior citizens and children 12-under.

    The Tigers will play the Staten Island Yankees at 4 p.m. in a game that will require separate entrance and tickets.
