    Local roundup: Tigers win on Burdeaux's single in eighth

    Norwich — Dylan Burdeaux’s one-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Luke Burch and gave the Connecticut Tigers a 2-1 win over the Williamsport Crosscutters in the completion of a suspended New York-Penn League game on Thursday at Dodd Stadium.

    Burch singled with one out and moved to second on Garrett McCain’s walk. Both runners advanced a base after a wild pitch while Burdeaux batted.

    Matt Manning, Clate Schmidt and Wladimir Pinto combined on a one-hitter with nine strikeouts for the Tigers (10-10). Pinto earned the win after pitching the final two innings with no hits and three strikeouts.

    Joey Morgan hit an RBI single in the fourth for Connecticut.

    The game had been suspended Wednesday night due to rain with Williamsport leading, 1-0, after 3 1/2 innings. Thursday’s regularly-scheduled game was cancelled after four innings.

    State Babe Ruth (14)

    • Trumbull led Stamford 2-0 in the top of the third inning when rain suspended play in the Connecticut Babe Ruth 14-year-old tournament losers' bracket game at Waterford. The game will be completed on at 5:30 p.m. Friday, forcing tournament officials to push the championship round a day to Saturday.

    Host Waterford, the only remaining unbeaten team in the double-elimination tournament, will play the Trumbull-Stamford winner on Saturday at 2 p.m. A deciding game, if necessary, will follow at 5:30 p.m. The state champion will advance to the New England tournament beginning July 21 at Trumbull.

    Women's basketball

    • Waterford's Adily Martucci made her debut with the Puerto Rico National Team this week in the FIBA Women's Centrobasket Championships at St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. Puerto Rico is off to a 2-0 start in round-robin play, defeating Jamaica 90-44 on Wednesday and Guatemala 87-55 on Thursday. Puerto Rico plays Mexico on Friday. Martucci, a recent Quinnipiac University graduate, has nine points in the two wins with three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

    District 10 baseball (9-10)

    • Tanner O’Brien and Chris Cambi each had two hits and Aiden Cochrane was the winning pitcher as East Lyme defeated Mystic 10-6 in Game 1 of the best-of-three championship series. Trace Morales had a double and home run for Mystic.

    State LL softball (11-12)

    • Waterford's opening game in the Connecticut Little League (11-12) championship was rained out. The District 10 and Section 3 champions will face Section 4 winner Windsor on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Rocky Hill.
