Florio wins 19th annual Niantic Bay Triathlon
Eric Florio of Bennington, Vermont, won the 19th annual Niantic Bay Triathlon on Sunday, finishing the event in 59:54. Florio won the half-mile swim in 9:24, the 3.2-mile run in 18:12 and was third in the 12-mile bike race in 30:54.
Amanda Bayer of West Hartford won the women's division, finishing eighth in 1:07.31. There were 459 competitors.
John MacDonald was second overall in 1:03.13 and David Smith was third at 1:03.24. Also finishing in the top 10 were Brendan Mims (1:03.35), Stonington's Milos Janicek (1:05.39), Justin Scott of East Lyme (1:05.49), Matthew Freiman (1:07.01), David Rivard-Lentz (1:07.46) and Ben Pare (1:08.00).
Area athletes finishing in the top 50 also included Jeff Kotecki of Mystic (12th, 1:08.18), Thomas Provencher of East Lyme (13th, 1:08.27), Brent Wiltshire of Stonington (14th, 1:08.51), Jason Anderson of Salem (29th, 1:12.07), Douglas Manfred of Mystic (35th, 1:12.52), Wyatt Smith of East Lyme (37th, 1:13.07), Travis Williams of East Lyme (45th, 1:14.40), Jennifer Massengale of Mystic (46th, 1:14.53) and Melanie Diamanti of Pawcatuck (49th, 1:15.19).
Smith, the third-place finisher, won the bike race in 29:49, followed by Scott at 30:52. James McElduff of Old Lyme was second in the swim at 9:45 followed by Neil Spazzarini (1:27.34). Scott was second in the run (19:25) followed by Freiman (19:26).
