Local roundup: Hynes leads Conn women to easy hoop win
New London — Mairead Hynes scored a season-high 29 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Connecticut College to an 84-59 victory over FDU-Florham in a women's basketball game on Thursday night.
Ashley Howe added 14 points off the bench and Casey Walsh finished with 10.
In other games:
• Edona Thaqi scored 24 points as Avery Point rolled to an 88-31 road win over Holyoke Community College in a Region 21 game. Tatyana LaFrance Boyce added 20 points, 11 rebounds and four steals for the Pointers (5-2, 2-0) while Meagan Bianchi had 11 assists and Egypt Santos grabbed 12 rebounds.
Men's basketball
• Tarchee Brown scored 26 points as Eastern Connecticut defeated Conn College 89-77. Dan Draffan scored 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting for the Camels and David Labossiere added 20.
Men's hockey
• Goalie Adam Huska made 39 saves to highlight UConn's 4-1 road victory over Vermont in a Hockey East game. Four different players scored for the Huskies (4-10-2, 3-6-1), who snapped a six-game winless streak.
H.S. football
• The New London High School Gridiron Club will host former head coach Jim Buonocore and his Whaler teams from 1969-98 during a special evening on Friday from 5-9 at the New London Elks. Anyone interest is welcome to attend to share stories, view scrapbooks, photos and videos. There will be a cash bar, and appetizers will be available along with raffle prizes, a 50-50 raffle and New London athletic apparel. Cash and check donations can be made upon arrival, with all proceeds going to the NLHS Gridiron Club to help start a football memorabilia room at New London in Coach Buonocore's name.
