    Local roundup: Brennan powers Pointers to victory

    Groton — Waterford's Mia Brennan scored 32 points and had 10 rebounds, 11 assists and 10 steals as Avery Point beat Bunker Hill Community College 106-41 in a women's basketball game on Saturday.

    The Pointers (6-1) are ranked third in the nation in NJCAA Division III. Julitza Delgado had 19 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, Quaker Hill's Rebekah Sanders had 16 points and 12 rebounds, Ashley Burke had 18 points and New London's Kenya Capers had 12 points and eight rebounds for Avery Point.

    In other games:

    • Francesca Pinard had 13 points and 13 rebounds as Mitchell College beat Bay Path 69-31 in a New England Collegiate Conference game. Jessica Lohneiss scored 13, Kate McCormack had 12 rebounds, five assists and seven steals and Inanna Rice came off the bench for 14 points and six steals for the Mariners (2-3, 2-0). 

    • Michaela Martinelli led six players in double figures with 19 points as Coast Guard beat Wheaton 89-60 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game. Martinelli, a senior, had 15 of her points in the second half as the Bears pulled away. Breanna Wood had 11 points and 11 rebounds, senior Johanna Moolenaar came off the bench for a career-high 14 points, Kyra Hartman scored 11 and Annabella Farabaugh and Emma Puddington each scored 10 for Coast Guard (3-4, 2-0).

    • Junior Sami Ashton scored a career-high 27 points as unbeaten Connecticut College beat FDU-Florham 71-58 in a nonleague game. Margaret Corcoran had 10 points and 10 rebounds and freshman Claire Gulbin came off the bench for 11 points for Conn (7-0). 

    Men's basketball

    • Mitchell College lost to Eastern Nazarene in the NECC opener for both teams, 79-71. Steffen Brunson scored 19 points, Domenico Santiago had 18 rebounds and 15 rebounds, Hasani Williams scored 14 and Waterford's Landon Peabody had 12 points for Mitchell (1-3).

    • Avery Point lost to Bunker Hill Community College, 101-55. Montville's John Domijan had 19 points and Elijah Malboeuf-Boyd scored 16 for the Pointers (3-7).

    • Connecticut College lost to Worcester State in a nonleague game, 76-72. David Labossiere had 21 points and eight rebounds and Dan Draffan had 16 points and nine rebounds for Conn (2-4). The game featured 17 ties and 17 lead changes.  

    • St. Thomas More beat Hoosac 82-58 on Friday. Nick McDonald had 18 points, Mick Lynott scored 17 and Jared Garcia had 11 points for the Chancellors (6-3).

    Men's swimming

    • No. 16 Coast Guard won every event en route to winning the five-team Connecticut Cup at Wesleyan. The Bears won with 794 points, followed by Connecticut College with 486. Patrick Jackson won the 50 backstroke (24.44), 100 butterfly (51.77) and the 100 backstroke (52.56) while Devin McClure won the 200 freestyle (1:45.70), 500 freestyle (4:40.85) and the 200 backstroke (1:56.07) to lead the Bears.

    Double winners for Coast Guard were Eric Fuhs, Colin Fenster and Joe Rodriguez. Taylor Rowe, Christian Lower, Chasse Sodemann and Tyler Dominick each won an event.

    Women's swimming

    • Coast Guard finished second at the Connecticut Cup led by Kristen Durham-Young, who won three events. Durham-Young won the 50 freestyle (24.67), 100 freestyle (52.92) and 200 freestyle (1:56.29). Celia Marzinsky and Josie McGuire won two races each for the Bears and teammate Sophia Furigay won an event. Connecticut College won the six-team event with 582 points and Coast Guard had 554.

    Wrestling

    • Coast Guard had five champions and four runnerups in winning the Ted Reese Invitational at Southern Maine. Parker Brunkala (125 pounds), Christian Gosch (157), Nick Remke (165), AJ Aeberli (174) and Paul Detwiler (184) each won championships while Matt McGowan (149), Nick Moreno (165) and Jon Wagner (197) and heavyweight Patrick Irwin finished second. Coast Guard finished with 174.5 points and Castleton State was second with 139.5.  

    H.S. girls' basketball

    • Williams School dropped its season opener, losing to MacDuffie 52-37 on Friday. Williams connected for seven 3-pointers. Olivia Kaplan had 14 points, including four 3-pointers, Mary Surprenant scored 11 and AnnaMae Saunders had seven points for Williams. 

    Men's hockey

    • Connecticut College and Williams played to a 2-2 tie in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Conn's Jacob Moreau tied the game at 2-2 16 minutes into the third period. Ryan Petti had a goal and an assist, Paul Capozzi, Colin Stevens and Colin McCabe had assists and Connor Rodericks made 25 saves for Conn (1-4-1, 0-3-1).

    • Middlebury scored the final two goals of the game, snapping a 2-2 tie, and beating Conn 4-2 on Friday. Moreau had a pair of power-play goals for Conn. Petti, Capozzi and Stevens had assists and Rodericks made 31 saves for Conn.

    • UConn lost its fifth straight game, falling to Massachusetts 7-4 in a Hockey East game on Friday. Mitchell Chaffee and Bobby Trivigno scored two goals each for UMass (12-1, 7-0), which led 3-2 after two periods. Kale Howarth scored twice, and Karl El-Mir and Wyatt Newpower each had a goal for UConn (5-9-1, 2-7-1), Ruslan Iskhakov had three assists and Benjamin Freeman had two assists. 

    Women's hockey

    • Connecticut College played to a 1-1 tie with No. 5 Middlebury in a NESCAC game. Jordan Cross scored off an assist from Ellie Branka for Conn to tie the game. Carly Denora made 25 saves for Conn (3-1-2, 1-1-2). Madie Leidt scored twice and had an assist as Middlebury beat Conn 3-0 on Friday.
