    Local roundup: Killingly trio reaches State Open wrestling semifinals

    New Haven — Dan Charron (106 pounds), Mike Charron (113), and Derek Turner (170) of Killingly are among five Eastern Connecticut Conference wrestlers who reached the CIAC State Open semifinal round on Friday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.

    The Open continues Saturday at 9 a.m. at the same site.

    Dan Charron, the top seed at 106 and Class M champion, will face Class L runner-up Evan Lindner of New Milford in his semifinal match.

    Class M champion Mike Charron will wrestle Class LL champion Travis Longo in his semifinal.

    Turner, also a Class M champion, meets Class L champion Dylan Sousa in his semifinal.

    Class S champion Johnny Falco of Griswold takes on Class M champion Nolan Bannon of Foran in a 195-pound semifinal.

    Ron Powers (152) from Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech had one of the day’s top upsets. Powers, who placed third at Class M, edged top-seeded and Class L champion Justin Marshall of Bristol Eastern, 6-5, in the quarterfinals. Powers meets Shayne McCourt of Law in the semis, the latter which beat him, 9-8, in last weekend’s M semifinals.

    Two-time defending Open champion Danbury leads with 80 points and has the most wrestlers still in the championship bracket (five). It has won a state-record 14 Open titles, all since 2001. Greenwich, Ledyard and Staples are tied for the second-most Open titles (three).

    Xavier is second (59) and Southington third (50). Killingly is tied for ninth with Fairfield Warde (35), Ledyard is 12th (29), Waterford 27th (17.5), Montville is tied for 44th (12), New London is tied for 48th (10), and Norwich Free Academy is tied for 63rd (5).

    Boys’ basketball

    • Jacob Geary had 19 points and 12 rebounds to pace No. 2 Stonington past No. 10 Wheeler, 78-36, in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II quarterfinal.

    R.J. Parrilla had 12 points and eight assists, Zach Scott scored 14 and Cooper Wall scored 12 for Stonington (16-5), which will play No. 3 Griswold in Saturday’s semifinal round at Waterford (2 p.m.).

    Bowen Baker and Scott Pion both scored 10 for the Lions (6-16).

    Boys' swimming

    • East Lyme swept an ECC tri-meet, beating NFA 122.5-54.5 and New London 142-36. NFA beat New London 104-60 as all three teams completed their dual-meet season. Bobby Hahn, Ryan McLaughlin, Hawken Hammen, Dean Palermo and Noah Krishnaswami won events for East Lyme (9-3, 8-2).

    East Lyme swept the relays with Ryan Huang, Jack Zhang, Jack Lombardo, Luke Proud, Powall Wang, Erik Stelter, Andrius Kirvelevicius and Aden Wu contributing. Jeffrey Ng and Alex Ji won two events each for NFA (5-5, 5-5). Ng won the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.09) and the 100 butterfly (1:00.52) and Ji won the 50 freestyle (24/54) and 100 breaststroke (1:05.87). New London finishes 0-10, 0-10.

    College baseball

    • Anthony Prado and Chris Winkel had three hits each as UConn beat College of Charleston 7-4. John Toppa and Winkel drove in two runs each and Christian Fedko homered for UConn (3-1). Starter Jeff Kersten got the win, allowing six hits and three runs over 5.2 innings.

    • Mitchell College opened its season with a 6-5 win over UMass Dartmouth at the New England Baseball Complex in Northboro, Mass. Eric Marriott hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to rally the Mariners from a 5-3 deficit. Freshman Doug DelaCruz of Montville hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat for Mitchell.

    Women’s track and field

    • Coast Guard’s Kaitlyn Mooney won the 5,000 meters in a meet record time of 16:36.89 on the first day of the New England Division III Championships at Bowdoin in Brunswick, Maine.

    Williams leads with 48 points, Coast Guard is fifth (12) and Conn College is tied for sixth (10).

    Mooney topped the record set by Amherst’s Carter Hamill (16.40.58, 2004).

    Conn College’s Shannon Kennedy finished fourth in the pentathlon and set a school record (3,151), besting the record she set earlier in the season (3,111). She also set a school-record in the long jump (17-5.5, 15th place), topping the record she set earlier in the season by four inches.

    Conn’s Ivana Lamptey, Ellie Ebby, Alicia Palmer and Sarah Clark finished seventh in the 4x200 and set a school record (1:47.42). The set the record earlier in the season (1:47.91).

    Men’s track and field

    • Coast Guard’s Michael Frick finished fifth in the pole vault (14-8) on the first day of the New England Division III Championships at MIT. MIT leads with 37 points and Coast Guard is 10th (3).

    Men’s swimming

    • Coast Guard freshman Devin McClure won the 500 freestyle in a school record time of 4 minutes, 30.36 seconds on the second day of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Championship at Worcester.

    Ten-time defending champion MIT leads with 517 points, followed by Coast Guard (439).

    The Bears’ Taylor Rowe finished third in the 500 freestyle champion (4:33.43). He was the two-time defending champion who previously held the school record (4:30.69, 2017).

    Dan Jenkins, Joe Rodriguez, Tyler Dominick and John Pompay were runner-up in the 200 freestyle relay and set a school record (1:21.69). The foursome set the record during the preliminaries (1:21.95). John Feller, Rodriguez, Jenkins and Pompay previously held the record, which they set at last year’s NEWMAC Championship (1:22.69).

    Patrick Jackson, McClure, Fuhs and Rodriguez finished third in the 400 medley relay and also set a school record (3:19.77). Patrick Jackson, Chasse Sodemann, Ross Garrett and Feller set the record last season (3:20.94).

    Rodriguez, the defending 50 freestyle champion, finished second (20.42) while Eric Fuhs was third in the 200 individual medley (1:52.59).

    Conn’s Jared Nussbaum and Charlie Adl finished fourth (4:31.12) and sixth (4:32.67), respectively, in the 500-yard freestyle on the second day of the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championship in Middlebury, Vt. Williams leads through 10 events with 767 points and Conn is seventh (330.5). Williams leads with 767 points. Marc Klepacki and Jaleel Watler, Dash Hunter and Adl also placed fifth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:23.29).

    Women’s swimming

    • Coast Guard’s Sarah Passilla won the 200 individual medley relay and set a school record (2:05.74) and swam on the school-record setting 200 freestyle relay team on the second day of the NEWMAC Championship.

    MIT leads with 469 points and Coast Guard is third (291).

    Passilla set the 200 IM school-record during the preliminaries (2:06.94). Chantel Ferguson began the day with the record (2:07.63, 2013).

    Hannah Fernandes, Felicia Lombardi, Kristen Durham-Young and Passilla finished second (1:36.36) in the 200 freestyle relay. The record was previously held by the team of Patti Eidenire, Groton’s Jackie Kokomoor, Christine McCulla and Durham-Young (1:36.84, 2016).

    Josie McGuire was runner-up in the 500 freestyle (5:01.70), and Durham-Young placed fifth in the 50 freestyle (24.32). The latter also set a school record in the 100 butterfly during the morning time trials (57.37), which was previously held by Ferguson (57.80, 2013).

    High school riflery

    • Seth Frates fired a 185 out of 200 to help Grasso Tech win the Connecticut Technical Conference Championship. Ciselia Colechia, Rick Dunn, Alex Potochniak, Kyle Rarogiewicz, Adam Riffe and Frates all earned all-conference honors for Grasso, which scored 911 points. The Eagles were also the regular season champion.
