Lima, Peru — India Pagan, the former all-state senior at New London High School and a junior at Stony Brook University, is a member of the Puerto Rican national team for women's basketball currently competing at the Pan Am Games.

Puerto Rico is playing in Group A along with Brazil, Canada and Paraguay, while the United States, Colombia, the Virgin Islands and Argentina make up Group B. The top two teams from each pool advance to a single-elimination round.

Pagan, a 6-foot-1 sophomore forward who was named to the America East All-Tournament Team last season for Stony Brook, played 9 minutes, 59 seconds in Puerto Rico's Pan Am opener against Paraguay on Tuesday, finishing with four points, a rebound and a steal in a 91-73 victory. Pagan, 20, the youngest member of the team, was 4-for-4 from the free thow line.

Puerto Rico was scheduled to play Brazil at 9 p.m. Wednesday and Canada at 9 p.m. Thursday.

Pagan will then join the Puerto Rican team as it travels to China for the Four Nations Tournament from Aug. 11-20.

Pagan was Stony Brook's leading rebounder last season, starting 30 games and averaging 12.1 points and 6.0 rebounds as the Seawolves went 23-8.

Tigers win

• Eliezer Alfonzo drove in two runs as the Connecticut Tigers won their season-best fourth straight game, beating the Aberdeen IronBirds 3-2 Tuesday night in a New York-Penn League baseball game. Trailing 2-1, the Tigers (24-26) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh. Alfonzo singled home Jake Holton to tie the game and Jose King scored on a groundout by Eric De La Rosa to take the lead.

The Tigers tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth when Corey Joyce scored on a groundout for Alfonzo. Zac Shepherd (1-3) got the win with two scoreless inning in relief, allowing one hit with four strikeouts. Yaya Chentouf finished up to earn his third save.

• The Panera Pirates wrapped up the regular-season title in the Eastern Connecticut Major League with a 4-1 win over the Three Rivers Sonics on Tuesday night. Jeremy Sagun hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Ken Olszewski and winning pitcher Matt Spang had doubles for the Pirates. Quantique White went the distance for Three Rivers.
