State police looking for pair of robbers

State police from Troop E in Montville are investigating the early-morning armed robbery of a Voluntown business.

Police said two males carrying handguns robbed the clerk at the Mobil station at 251 Main St. at 4:03 Wednesday morning.

Both men were dressed in black, wearing baseball caps, and covered their faces with bandanas, police said. The men took an undisclosed amount of money out of the register and fled the scene.

Troopers searched the area, and a criminal investigation was initiated. Troopers obtained store video footage of the suspects as they entered the station along with other information, including still photos from the security surveillance. They said witnesses provided specific details of the robbery.

One suspect is described as a black male approximately 6 feet tall and was wearing a Pittsburgh Pirates baseball cap, the other a heavy-set white male approximately 5 feet, 10 inches tall. They were believed to have fled in a dark-colored SUV.

Troopers are asking anyone who might have information about the robbery to call the State Police Criminal Investigations Unit at (860) 848-6532 or the TIP line 860-848-6545.

All calls will be kept in strict confidence.
