Police: Franklin man crashes car, causes power outages

Groton — Police arrested a Franklin man Saturday morning after police said he drunkenly hit a fire hydrant and utility pole, leaving his crashed car in someone's front lawn.

Groton Town police said John E. Massengill, 66, ran from the 4:19 a.m. crash scene. He and a passenger were apprehended in the nearby woods.

Police charged Massengill with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving, evading responsibility, fourth-degree criminal mischief and interfering with an investigation.

Police said Massengill's car was discovered with heavy front-end damage resting on the lawn at 360 Groton Long Point Road.

Police said the crash caused hours of power outages in the Noank and Mumford Cove sections of Groton.

Massengill was released on $5,000 bond, police said, and is scheduled to appear in court May 4.
