Lyme —  Residents are being asked to be on the alert after a recent spate of burglaries in town.

First Selectman Ralph Eno said the most recent burglary happened about a week or so ago. Eno said there have been six burglaries in recent months that he is aware of.

The burglar or burglars appears to be “quite sophisticated,” he said.

Eno said the thieves are targeting homes in which  the homeowner is away for a protracted period of time. He said not one particular area of town is being targeted.

Items like artwork, silverware and jewelry are being taken, he said.

According to the town’s web site, a private residence on Mt. Archer Road was burglarized and a significant amount of jewelry was stolen.

“It seems once they get in they stay a while,” said Eno. “They have been very methodical, careful not to disturb objects and to put things back in its place.”

Eno said the town has established  a Patrol Check Request program. Homeowners who will be out of town can request that state police check their homes.

The town’s overtime budget for police will pay for this program.

He also said the town is in the process of developing a townwide notification system.

“If you see something, report it,” said Eno. “Get the make, model of the car and call the police barracks immediately. Don’t worry about it not panning out.”
