Norwich shooting Sunday remains under investigation

Norwich – Police were mum Monday with any details about Sunday’s early morning shooting at a restaurant on Laurel Hill Avenue that left one woman dead and another injured.

Police said a man shot the women in the bar section of Mai Thai Restaurant and Bar just before 2 a.m. The bar, at 327 Laurel Hill Ave., was just preparing to close, police said. The suspect remains at large, and police would not confirm Monday if a suspect has been identified. No arrest has been made in the case and police have not released the identity of either victim.

Police said the gunman fled at first on foot, but may have gotten into a waiting car. The shooter fled during the mayhem in the parking lot that followed the shooting.

A shooting in New London almost thirty minutes later does not appear to be related, New London police said Monday. A suspect in that case was arrested immediately after that shooting in which two people suffered minor injuries. Javier Muniz, 25, was arraigned Monday on charges related to that incident.

The homicide is the first of the year in Norwich. The most recent murder was in December, when Jaclyn Wirth, 26, was shot and killed in her East Baltic Street apartment. Wirth’s killer remains at large.

Sunday’s shooting remains under investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Norwich police department.
