Bozrah – A car traveling east on Route 2 Sunday evening struck and killed a 2-year-old moose that had been seen in the area for several weeks.

The driver of the car was not injured, state police said.

Andrew Labonte, wildlife biologist with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, said today that a local sportmen’s club retrieved the moose carcass. A male, it weighed about 620 pounds.

DEEP has received several reports of moose sightings along Route 2 in Bozrah and Colchester this summer. The moose struck at about 8 p.m. Sunday is believed to be the same animal, he said.

There has been one other accident involving a moose and a motor vehicle this year, in the northwest corner town of Hartland. Labonte said there are about 75 to 100 moose statewide.

Moose are most active from mid-September when breeding season starts through October.
