New London — A 21-year-old man was taken into custody late Thursday morning after firefighters said the man started a fire in a shopping cart in a vacant building on the former Miner & Alexander property so that he could stay warm.

Miguel A. Troche-Cabrera, of no certain address, was charged with third-degree criminal trespass, reckless burning and reckless endangerment.

Battalion Chief Marc A. Melanson said Amtrak workers doing some work on the tracks spotted smoke coming from the building at 150 Howard St. The building has "no trespassing" signs posted on it.

He said firefighters extinguished the fire in the shopping cart. No other people were found in the building. He said the fire was contained to the cart.

A FAST team from the Naval Submarine Base was called in as a precaution.
