Groton man charged with assaulting two people by apartment complex

Groton — A Groton man was arrested in connection with the assault of two adults Friday night at a Benham Road apartment complex, police said.

Around 10:30 p.m., police responded to Eastern Point Efficiencies at 107 Benham Road for a report of a disturbance. When they arrived, they found a male and female suffering minor injuries, police said.

Richard McBride, 49, of a last known address of 11-13 High St., was charged Friday with third-degree assault, two counts of second-degree beach of peace, interfering with an officer, third-degree criminal mischief, second-degree threatening, criminal attempt to escape from police custody and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The victims, police said, told them that McBride had assaulted them and then left the area on foot.

About 30 minutes later, police said, they saw McBride near an apartment complex on Meridian Street by Washington Park.

As officers approached him, McBride ran into the woods nearby.

After a brief search, police found McBride, who then complained of "minor shoulder pain and discomfort," according to police.

McBride was taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital for an evaluation. He tried to escape from police custody but was stopped before he was able to leave the hospital, police said.

In a press release Saturday, police said McBride had two pending warrants for arrest, and he also was charged with second-degree failure to appear in court and violation of probation.

He was being held in lieu of a $60,000 cash bond.
