UPDATED: Car accident shuts down section of Broad Street in New London

New London – A portion of Broad Street between Colman Street and Jefferson Avenue was closed for more than an hour Thursday night after two cars crashed and one rolled over onto its roof.

Fire department Battalion Chief Thomas Curcio said one passenger in the rolled-over Chevrolet Spark was taken to the hospital for observation following the 8 p.m. crash. The person appeared to have escaped major injury, Curcio said. Four people had been in the small vehicle when it flipped, he said, and all of the car's airbags deployed.

    No other injuries were reported.

It appeared both cars had been headed southbound when a minivan rear-ended the Spark, Curcio said, right in front of Secor Imports on Broad Street. Waterford police cruisers blocked off Broad Street at Jefferson Avenue for more than an hour as tow trucks responded to the scene to clear the wrecked vehicles.

New London police blocked the roadway at Colman Street and the New London Fire Department tended to the injured person and provided lighting as personnel cleaned up the scene.
