    Fire damages Ledyard home

Ledyard — A home at 19 South Glenwoods Road was severely damaged in an early morning fire.

Gales Ferry Fire Chief Anthony Saccone said the fire was reported at 1:30 a.m.

He said the occupants of the home two adults, one child and a dog safely managed to get out of the house. He said smoke detectors alerted them to the fire.

When fire crews arrived, Saccone said there was heavy fire to the front and rear of the house.

He said fire crews initially had some trouble fighting the blaze because an electrical line that provides power to the home had fallen onto the driveway.

"We had to work around it until power was shut off," said Saccone.

Saccone said the fire caused significant damage to most of the house. He said it took 40 minutes to get the fire under control.

He said one firefighter was treated and released at an area hospital for a cut to the leg.

The rear along with the side of the home is completely charred. The roof also appears to be heavily damaged by the fire.

Firefighters had cleared the scene by 6 a.m. The local fire marshal along with the state fire marshal remained at the scene.

Saccone said that the family did not request assistance from the American Red Cross and had made arrangements to stay somewhere else.

In addition to Gales Ferry, Ledyard and Mohegan Tribal fire departments also responded.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
