    Colchester woman killed by falling tree in East Hampton identified

    East Hampton — The woman who was killed Monday when a tree fell on her at the Salmon River State Forest has been identified as 45-year-old Barbara Young of Colchester, according to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

    Young’s daughter, Jessica Surratt, 18, also of Colchester, was injured and flown by Life Star helicopter to Hartford Hospital with a serious leg injury. She was listed in serious condition Tuesday afternoon.

    Young’s son Kevin Surratt, 22, was not injured in the incident.

    According to DEEP, Young and her two children walked to the bank of the Salmon River Monday afternoon. The incident, reported at around 1:30 p.m., occurred within several minutes of their arrival.

    Several nearby fishermen assisted until emergency medical services arrived.

    Young was pronounced dead at the scene.

    The DEEP EnCon police are conducting the investigation with the assistance of state and local police.
