Westerly man seriously injured in motorcycle accident

Westerly — A Westerly man was flown by Life Star helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital Monday night after he lost control of the motorcycle he was driving in the area of White Rock Road and Cottage Street.

Police said they responded to the area around 9:44 p.m., where they found a man later identified as 38-year-old Jay Grindle in and out of consciousness and bleeding from the head. He was not wearing a helmet.

Grindle was given medical assistance at the scene and then flown by helicopter to the hospital, where he is listed in good condition.

At the scene, police said they found an unregistered motorcycle that did not appear to be street-legal.

Police said there were raised sewer caps surrounded by asphalt on the roadway as it is being repaved. It appeared that Grindle hit one of the raised sewer caps and became airborne. The front wheel was dislodged from the motorcycle. Police said he was thrown 50 feet from where he struck the sewer cap. Speed did not appear to be a factor, police said.

Police said Grindle will be charged with driving with a suspended license and driving an unregistered motor vehicle.
