Groton Town police search for suspects in cellphone thefts

Groton — Town police are investigating the theft of a cellphone Monday at the Wireless Zone in which police said the culprits appear to be a couple who were with a young child when the theft occurred.

At about 4:15 p.m., police said a white woman, a Hispanic man and a young child entered the store, located at the Groton Square Shopping Center off Route 12. While inside, the woman stole a Samsung Galaxy III cellphone worth $650, police said. The woman left the store alone. The male and young child left a short time later.

The entire incident was captured on store video surveillance. In the video, police said the man appears to be the lookout and is with the child when he distracts an employee while the woman walks out the door with the phone.

While investigating the theft, Groton Town police learned that earlier that afternoon, the three suspects had been at a New London store where they had allegedly committed the same type of theft.

Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspects and plan to release a video of the theft.

If anyone has information about the theft or the identity of the suspects, contact Groton Town police at (860) 441-6712.
