Norwich — Police have arrested the third and final suspect in the brutal 2004 beating death of New Hampshire scientist and author Eugene Mallove.

City police detectives on Tuesday charged Mozzelle Brown, 40, with murder, felony murder and first-degree robbery for his alleged role in Mallove’s May 14, 2004, death outside 119 Salem Turnpike.

Brown is the cousin of Chad Schaffer, a Norwich man serving a 16-year prison sentence for his role in Mallove’s death. Schaffer, who at one time lived at Mallove’s rental home, was charged in 2010 along with his girlfriend, Candace Foster. Foster awaits trial.

At Schaffer’s trial, Foster testified she drove with Schaffer and Brown to the Salem Turnpike home to find Mallove severely beaten and lying face down in the driveway. They continued to beat Mallove, she testified, to make it look like a robbery.

At the time, Mallove, 56, had traveled to Norwich to clean out the home after evicting Schaffer’s parents a month earlier. Police allege Schaffer and Brown had confronted Mallove, who was seen throwing out belongings left at the home.

At the time of Brown’s arrest, he was serving a federal prison sentence in Elkton, Ohio, for firearms and narcotics violations but was brought back to Connecticut to face the new charges.

Brown was held in lieu of a $2 million court set bond and is scheduled to be arraigned today in Norwich Superior Court.
