State police plan extra patrols over Thanksgiving weekend

State police will supplement normal patrols with additional troopers over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend as part of Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort).

The effort began Wednesday and will run through midnight Sunday. Police said the target of the enforcement effort is drunken, aggressive and unsafe drivers.

Troopers will man sobriety checkpoints and roving DUI patrols throughout the entire weekend. Uniformed troopers will use nontraditional patrol cars to observe traffic and issue tickets to reckless, distracted drivers.

Last Thanksgiving weekend, state police handed out 1,611 speeding tickets, made 62 DUI arrests and investigated 410 accidents, which included three fatalities.
