Man charged with attempting to set Montville church on fire

Montville — A New London man was arrested late Monday night after police said he attempted to set the Calvary Chapel at 146 Sharp Hill Road on fire.

Abraham Josue Mejia Osorio, 19, of 18 Willetts Ave. was charged with second-degree arson, first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree breach of peace and third-degree criminal mischief.

Montville police said they responded to the Calvary Chapel shortly before 11 p.m. for a report of a person attempting to light objects inside the church on fire.

That person, later identified as Osorio, got upset when people at the church function would not help him get his car started. Police said members of the church did not help him because they believed he was intoxicated.

Police said Osorio lit several small items on fire, including a hat, a roll of toilet paper and a decorative display that were all inside the church. Members of the church were able to extinguish the fires prior to them extending to the actual structure of the church.

Members of the church were able to physically remove Osorio from the building.

When his attempts to set the church on fire failed, police said he unsuccessfully attempted to set the interior roof of his car on fire.

    No injuries were reported.

Police said they took Osorio into custody without incident. He was held in lieu of a $50,000 bond, pending his arraignment Tuesday in Norwich Superior Court.
