Ledyard man charged with stealing guns

Ledyard – A lengthy investigation into the theft of multiple firearms from a Gales Ferry residence led to the arrest Thursday of a Gales Ferry man.

Ledyard police charged James C Murphy, 38, of 14 Hillcrest Ave. with six counts of theft of a firearm.

The stolen firearms were taken from his family's Gales Ferry home on multiple dates between July 2013 and February of 2014, according to a statement from Ledyard Police Lt. Michael T. Finkelstein.

Police said the firearms were sold or traded throughout southeastern Connecticut. After his arrest, Murphy was processed and held on a $160,000 bond. He will be presented Friday in New London Superior Court.

State police and police in Groton City, Groton Town, New London, Norwich, Waterford and Westerly assisted the Ledyard Police Department in its investigation.

Police said a search for the stolen firearms continues.
