Clerk in Groton store fined for selling tobacco products to underage person

Groton — Town police and staff of the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services' Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program on Friday fined a clerk at a Gold Star Highway convenience store for selling cigarettes or other tobacco products to someone under age 18.

Police said officers, DMHAS and underage youth employed by the program were involved in inspections of 19 stores in town that sell tobacco products to determine compliance with bans on sales to anyone under age 18.

All stores were in compliance except Veterans Convenience Store at 528 Gold Star Highway. The clerk who sold the products was issued a $200 infraction, police said.
