    Five escape fire in Pawcatuck

Firefighters battle a structure fire at 31 S. Broad St. in Pawcatuck, Sunday, June 1, 2014.

Stonington — Five people living in a two-story, single-family home in the Pawcatuck section of town escaped injury Sunday night when fire broke out in a bedroom in the rear of the dwelling, fire officials at the scene said.

The occupants — two adults and three children, all of whom were believed to be under the age of 10 — were not immediately identified. They were all outside the building at 31 S. Broad St. when firefighters arrived, Pawcatuck Fire Chief Tom Long said.

The occupants were tenants, he said.

Firefighters received they call at 9:38 p.m. and were still at the scene at 11.

Long said the cause of the fire, which caused significant damage, would be investigated by the fire marshal.

Westerly Ambulance crews also responded to the incident.
