    Driver charged after car strikes school bus in New London

    New London — Police said they charged a 20-year-old city man with reckless driving and driving while his license is suspended Saturday morning. They said after he lost control of his car on Jefferson Avenue and struck a school bus.

    Richard Nieves of 10 Anthony Road was driving too fast at a curve of the road when he crossed the double yellow line and struck the southbound school bus at 10:26 a.m., according to police.

    No children were aboard the bus, and there were no reported injuries — but police said both vehicles sustained extensive damage.

    Jefferson Avenue was closed between Chester Street and Broad Street for about an hour while crews cleared the scene.
