Retired New London Police Officer released on bond in harassment case

Retired New London police Officer Chad L. Stringer, who has been incarcerated for the past three weeks on harassment and voyeurism charges related to his ex-wife, was released on bond following an appearance Thursday in New London Superior Court.

Stringer, 41, of 10 Tyler Place, Quaker Hill, had been held at the MacDougall-Walker Correction Institution in lieu of $60,000 since Dec. 22.

Brought to the courthouse from prison, he stood before Judge Omar A. Williams shackled and wearing an orange prison jumpsuit.

His attorney, Jassette A. Henry from the public defender's office, said a family member was prepared to post the bond and that she had arranged for Stringer to receive treatment through the Southeastern Mental Health Authority.

The judge ordered GPS monitoring for Stringer at his own expense and said he could leave his home for work and treatment.

Williams ordered Stringer to comply with the mental health authority, take medication if necessary and obey a protective order that forbids him from having contact with his ex-wife.

He was released a short time later.

Stringer was a patrolman with the New London Police Department for more than 12 years before being granted a service-connected disability retirement in 2009.

He and Lisa Stringer were divorced in April 2015, according to court records. He told his attorney Thursday that he currently is employed full time.

Waterford Police charged Stringer last month in three separate cases involving his ex-wife

According to arrest warrant affidavits, Stringer sent her a series of emails and texts, including sexual photographs of her and him that she was unaware he had taken.

He also is accused of puncturing the rear passenger side tire on her vehicle while she shopped at Target on Dec. 18.

Though a protective order prohibits Stringer from having contact with the alleged victim and any others "with whom the contact would be likely to cause annoyance or alarm to the protected person," Stringer also is accused of sending text messages to her current boyfriend.

Prior to his arrest in December, Stringer had two pending criminal cases from May of 2015. His next court date is Feb. 4.
