New London — Traffic was backing up quickly after a two-car crash happened in an area of Interstate 95 north already bogged down by construction work, according to the state Department of Transportation.

DOT officials said the two left lanes near Exit 83 were closed because of the wreck, which happened just before noon. The center lane reopened within about 30 minutes.

Construction in the area began at 9 a.m. and was slated to last until 3 p.m. The farthest left lane was closed for that work, which was scheduled to span from Exit 83 to Exit 85.
