Waterford — Firefighters responded to the roof of Great Neck Elementary School Monday afternoon after the ladder a town worker was using collapsed.

Goshen Fire Chief Todd Patton said firefighters arrived at the 165 Great Neck Road school not long after 1 p.m. and found a man who was conscious and alert but complaining of left leg and hip pain.

Patton said the man was working from a lower section of the building’s roof when the ladder collapsed and fell on top of him. Patton said the man probably fell about four feet.

Because the call was classified as a "high angle rescue," all of Waterford’s departments responded to the scene. Firefighters initially considered using another ladder to lift the man up and into the school, but instead opted to use a ladder truck to lift him off the roof and down to safety.

Crews then took the man to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

“All the guys did a professional job and the patient made it off the roof safely,” Patton said.
